Visit to Wellington’s headquarters at Monte da Gramicha, Elvas

During the 2nd Siege of Badajoz, at the end of May 1811, Wellington moved his Headquarters to the Monte da Gramicha, midway between Elvas and the Spanish frontier. It belonged then, as it does today, to the Gonçalves family. The current owners are Henrique Gonçalves, the Association’s Treasurer, and his mother Marivi, who have very kindly allowed us to visit the property. On 17 June 1811, Wellington raised the siege as two French armies under Marmont (north) and Soult (south) converged on Badajoz. He moved his divisions to the high ground between Elvas and Campo Maior and relocated his headquarters to the Quinta de São João, half-way between the two towns. During our visit, the action will be explained in detail when the French, under Gen Latour Maubourg, made a reconnaissance in force on the 22nd June, which was only stopped just short of Gramicha.

Meeting point: the Car Park opposite the Hotel D. Luis, at 11.00

Wine-tasting and Lunch at Garrafeira de Fronteira

This is the oldest garrafeira (wine shop) in Elvas. It was started as a hobby by the father of the present owners, who have turned it into a magnificent assembly of Portuguese wines, including their father’s collection, which features wines going back to the 19th century. We start with a wine-tasting of three selected Portuguese wines, followed by lunch. The cost is 25.00€.
